I am very interested in fresh water fly fishing. I have a beguinner fly reel and rod but have no clue how to cast it properly. Have much experience with spincasting but think therein lies the problem. Can you help?

Hi, I am a first time fly-fisherman myself, with some experience level with a fly-rod, mainly when I was a kid.  But, recently bought a fly rod at thingy's and after a trip to Stone Mtn. last weekend, I have fell in love with the sport.  But, I am clueless and looking for some information on learning.  If anybody knowsof a teacher, a good book even, or some clinics, or clubs I could get involved in, that would be great.  Thanks.

Try the library for good videos on flyfishing, watch over and over, then get out in the driveway or street and practice casting.
That said, not much water in NC requires overhead casting--too much overhang, narrow streams, etc.

Learn the rollcast, and practice flipping your fly out with wrist action.  Short rods are best on most NC water unless you're on the big rivers you can float.

To the spin caster; hardest thing for you is that you'll be in the habit of a hard forward cast. Not necessary with flyfishin.   12o'clock positon for your back stroke, and two o'clock for your forward. Keep elbow down. Hand and wrist should be fairly straight with your rod (imagine your thumb straight up the pole). You want a snap, but don't ever "throw" your cast.  Think of back stroke as important and forward.  Make sure you pause a second or so on the back stroke before coming forward again.  If the line makes a snapping sound, you are doing it too hard and fast.  Slow it down.  Best help for me though, videos.
