| Middle Fork of the New River |
 |
 |
| The fishable portion begins at Chetola Dam and continues
all the way to the confluence with the South Fork. It is a medium sized
stream and very accessible in most parts of it. Parking is available on
the side of the road, but to access some parts of it it may be necessary to
walk a considerable distance from a suitable parking spot.
Fish in the river are normally small to medium in size, but like every
river it has a few fish that have managed to outsmart the most of us. A wide
variety of fishing techniques can be utilized, dry flies are usable because
of the many slow moving flat sections. But it is also deep enough and swift
enough for nymphs to be quite effective. A NC Hatch chart is typically right
on the money for most of the season, though midges can prove effective when
nothing else will. Average depth ranges from one to four feet during normal
river height.
Favorite spots: Portion next to the Blue Ridge Parkway,
portion crossing Aho Rd., and section running near Roaring River Rd.
