Hot Spots
Below are some of FlyFishNC.com's "Hot Spots". Fishing these rivers and streams can produce some really big fish (like the Watauga River) while other's can offer up a creel-full of stocked trout (Stone Mountain State Park). Each stream listed below contains directions, trout species in the stream, fishability, and more. If you want the opportunity to land some of North Carolina's finest trout, select a stream below.

  • Big Helton Creek - Fishability: fairly easy, 8 foot or less rod, 4 or 5 weight
  • Boone Fork Creek - This river that starts at the "Price Lake" dam is mostly posted, but there are still a few sections that are "fishable".
  • Davidson River - If you are looking for challenging fly-fishing, this river has all the right components.
  • Kapps Mill - Located outside of Boone, NC
  • Middle Fork of the New River - A medium sized stream and very accessible in most parts.
  • Stone Mountain State Park - Located off of I-77 near Elkin, this State Park has some excellent waters to fish including a "Fish for Fun" section.
  • Watauga River - One of the favorite places to fish in the "High Country". Located just beside of Highway 105 and starting at the base of Grand Father Mountain, this river is excellent.
